Beeswax Wraps

In Room 11 we have been making beeswax wraps.

We can use beeswaxwraps instead of using paper or glad wrap.

We can use them to wrap our sandwhiches or left overs we want ot keep in the fridge.

First we had to grate the solid blocks of beeswax.

It was quite a slow job and we needed lots of persistence to get enough.

The next step was to sprinkle the grated wax over our choosen fabric.

We had to sprinkle it evenly.

Next we placed a sheet of baking paper over the fabric and we started to iron it.

We ironed it slowly and carefully until  all  the wax melted.

It didn't take long before the wax was dry and hard and our wrap was ready to use.

The beeswax made the classroom smell nice.

Sowing Seeds

Since it was spring we thought it would be a good time to sow some seeds and let them germinate.

We sowed sunflower and bean seeds. We learnt that they took about 10 days to germinate
We filled our pots with potting mix.

After we planted our seeds we watered them.

Then we watched a video about what happens when a seed is germinating.

Floating and Sinking

We read the big book Floating and Sinking.

At first we thought small things floated and big things sank. Then we thought about boats (big objects ) and  marbles (small objects).

We decided to try out some  experiments for ourselves.

We collected objects from the class and make a chart of our predictions. What would float and what would sink.

We learnt that if an object is light for its size it will float and if an object is heavy for its size it will sink.

We make chart to record our findings.

Maths Focus - Hundreds Board

For 2 weeks we focused on traveling around the hundreds board. We were learning that:

If you travel a straight line down the numbers get bigger by 10 for every square.
If you travel in  a staight line up the numbers get smaller by 10 for every square.
If you travel to the right the numbers get bigger by 1's.
If you travel to the lest the numbers get smaller by 1's.

Here is link to a an interactive hundreds chart where children can practise this skill.Hundreds Bpoard

After weeks of working on creating an animal enclosure the children had achance to share their habitats with other Rimu children and we got a chance to visit other classrooms to look at their creations. It was avery interesting day.

We had to think about the animals natural habitat and environment and try to recreate it.
