Discovery Time

This was one of the stand out models created during this weeks Discovery Time. It  took a bit of engineering and patience. It has lots of symmetry- two sides matching.

Buddy Class

We shared a Matariki Feast with our buddy class Room 15.

We had fruit kebabs, soup, bread and honey, carrot and apple sticks and cheese and crackers
We also did  reading with our buddy class this week.

We sat side by side...

and listened to our buddy read.  We  helped them if they got  stuck.

Duffy Show

The theme of the how was about bulling and how reading can help sort the problem of bullying.

One of the characters was  a girl called Melody who was being bullied.

Melody was not happy in class and the bully was mean in class.

Boris  became friends with Melody and gave her a book to read.
Reading a book helped Melody feel calmer an happier.

Eventually the bully read the book and the story was about a Halloween Bully.
While reading she realised she her self had been a bully.
Reading also made her feel calmer.

Tessalations

We have been learning that the shape of the honeycomb in the beehive is made up of hexagon shapes and is a type of tessellation.

We are learning that tessellations are patterns made with  certain shapes joined together and there are no gaps or spaces. The repeating pattern can go on forever.

Here are some tessellations with hexagons ( 6 sided shape) and triangles ( 3 sided shapes ).

A Very Busy Week

Week 5 was a very busy week at Owairaka School. It was Samoan language week and the children took turns at reading the roll and greeting their classmates in Samoan.  With the help of the Samoan children in the class we also learnt to count to 10 and say some colours in Samoan. Some of the children got to experience eating fresh coconut in the Fale at lunch time.

Week 5 was also Green Week and  a main focus was learning more about the fascinating world of bees.
We were writing about bees and drawing bees.

Did you know:  A worker bee lives for about 6 weeks and they don't sleep in that time.
Over the course of a worker bee's life she will produce 1/12 of a teaspoon of honey.
A worker bee makes 10 trips a day and visits 50-100 flowers on each trip,

Travel Wise: We encourage walking to school and joining a walking school bus. On Green Day
assembly we had some special visitors come. Some of the children who walked to school were lucky enough to get a prize from the draw.

On Friday we had a bonus show with Green Day message. The theme of the show was highlighting the sad fate of turtles and other sea life as the ocean becomes filled with more and more plastic. The children were really entertained and got understand a very important message.

Help save our oceans 1 plastic bag, 1 plastic straw and 1 plastic bottle at a time. Where ever possible use recycled bags for shopping and paper straws instead of plastic straws.
