A Very Busy Week

Week 5 was a very busy week at Owairaka School. It was Samoan language week and the children took turns at reading the roll and greeting their classmates in Samoan.  With the help of the Samoan children in the class we also learnt to count to 10 and say some colours in Samoan. Some of the children got to experience eating fresh coconut in the Fale at lunch time.

Week 5 was also Green Week and  a main focus was learning more about the fascinating world of bees.
We were writing about bees and drawing bees.

Did you know:  A worker bee lives for about 6 weeks and they don't sleep in that time.
Over the course of a worker bee's life she will produce 1/12 of a teaspoon of honey.
A worker bee makes 10 trips a day and visits 50-100 flowers on each trip,

Travel Wise: We encourage walking to school and joining a walking school bus. On Green Day
assembly we had some special visitors come. Some of the children who walked to school were lucky enough to get a prize from the draw.

On Friday we had a bonus show with Green Day message. The theme of the show was highlighting the sad fate of turtles and other sea life as the ocean becomes filled with more and more plastic. The children were really entertained and got understand a very important message.

Help save our oceans 1 plastic bag, 1 plastic straw and 1 plastic bottle at a time. Where ever possible use recycled bags for shopping and paper straws instead of plastic straws.
