Room 11's Class Treaty

Room 11 has been learning what a treaty is. We read the story 'The Tree Hut Treaty' it helped us to think about what a treaty is and what it helps us to do. Noah linked this to the Treaty of Waitangi, and Eva said that she had been to Waitangi for Waitangi day.

In Room 11 we thought a treaty was....

We then discussed our school values of Manaakitanga, Manawanuitanga and Kaitiakitanga, and our school rules of being kind and staying safe.

We worked in groups to come up with ideas about what each of the values and rules means in our classroom. We had a lot of good ideas!

A few days later we used a rubric to help us explain how each of our school values and rules looked in our classroom, in the cloak bay, on the mat and during our learning time. We added more ideas to our first brainstorm.

After that we decided which ideas were the most important to us in Room 11. We had to all agree that these were things that we wanted to see happen in our class. Once we had agreed it was time to sign our names to show that we promise to follow these rules in our classroom.

We had a special ceremony. We signed our names or a feather and we said "We promise to follow our class treaty". Everyone had a turn, even Donna and Jennie.

Our treaty feathers are displayed on the prow of our class waka and a our treaty agreements are shown on the waka.

We really are an awesome team ready to explore and discover throughout the year!
